Il y a plus de 15 mois, les bassins de décantation de la mine Kearl de la Compagnie pétrolière impériale Ltée auraient laissé échapper plus de 5,3 millions de litres de pétrole toxique dans le bassin hydrographique de l'Athabasca. Imperial et l'Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) ont omis d'informer les communautés autochtones touchées pendant plus de neuf mois après la découverte de la fuite.
